The Google mobile phone headed our way.

Meebo opens up - adds applications and APIs

http://blog.meebo.com/?p=370

Meebo continues to amaze and delight. They had me at hello, which was web-based IM for multiple services, no downloads, no Java. Then they let me talk across multiple services. They added group chat. Logging. Millions of other enhancements like the sound alerts and visual cues (via the browser!) for new messages. A chat widget I can add to web pages for people to talk to me. Meebo rooms, which can include multimedia you can share with a group. They are super-responsive and sensitive to their customers, for instance speeding up shutdown times recently.

Now they have kicked it up another notch by opening up their platform ala Facebook for applications. For instance rather than writing video and audio chat, they just wrote an application for some of the other great services out there. And other developers can use it too! Awesome. These guys rock!

Tasklist /SVC

Ever have XP go to 100% CPU? When you try to find the offending process in Task Manager it shows up as "svchost"? Svchost is a tool that gives non-executable dlls and services a way to run. It is generic, and there can be mutiple copies of it in Task Manager. To figure out which application is really causing the problem, grab the PID (Process ID, non-default column in Task Manager), and look for it in the list generated by typing "tasklist /svc" at the command line.

Get Google mobile apps the iPhone way

http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007/10/google-on-iphone.html

This is simple and smart. Change your browser user-agent string to the iPhone one, and get the *special* iPhone-optimized versions of Google mobile apps. This might be useful for other sites too. Be nice to be able to change this with a script.

Ultra-mobile PC roundup

http://webworkerdaily.com/2007/10/03/who-needs-a-notebook-three-slick-mobile-alternatives/

They've gathered the meagre pickings together in one place. I expect that this category will explode in the years to come. I find the current offerings disappointing. Why put it out there if it is slow and buggy, underpowered, hot, with poor battery life and no graphics? I wouldn't buy one because I'm sure it would annoy me more than help me. But something this size is exactly what I want.

Threaded email in Outlook

http://lifehacker.com/software/email-apps/make-outlook-thread-conversations-like-gmail-157042.php

This seems like a revolutionary idea to me, especially given how important Outlook and email is to my day-to-day routine (work and non).

I have changed my view to include the conversation header, and enabled grouping. I have set up the rule to copy sent items to the inbox. It's not clear here, but new mail does end up at the top with sorting by conversation, even though the threading is "kinda" by subject.

This is a huge change but I am going to give it a serious trial, as it makes so much sense. Further I plan to leave the sent items unread until I get a reply - that gives me the ability to track emails I am waiting for a response to, something I have always wanted.

Remote Desktop better yet missing from Windows Mobile 6

Turns out Remote Desktop (Terminal Services) has been highly improved in Windows Mobile 6, however it has been made an optional part of the OS.
http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=4029

Verizon elected not to include it on the i760...
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsung-sch-i760/92728-terminal-services-where.html

However the great folks at pdaphonehome as usual have managed to hack around this to bring us satisfaction!

Windows Mobile 9 postponed to 2009

http://msmobiles.com/news.php/6805.html

Makes me feel more confident about the Windows Mobile 6 phone I just ordered, that has been withering on the vine for a year waiting for Verizon to release it. At least the OS won't be immediately left in the rearview mirror... Wonder if the delay has anything to do with the success of the iPhone and the threat of the gPhone...

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071017-mobile-google-docs-off-to-a-nice-start-but-not-there-yet.html

Exactly! Google gets this, at least half-way. Some of the mobile apps seem a little half-hearted, less than completely thought-through in terms of usefulness and focus, but at least they are light-years ahead of so many companies in "mobil-izing"!

Audio recorder for PocketPC

http://www.axyzmobile.com/products/keep-recordin

Now unless I am totally confused here, the bonus of this program is that you can get the audio in a format you can actually get off of your PocketPC (Windows Mobile device) and do something with..

The problem with the native audio recording on PocketPC is that the "wav" ends up in a "Note", and there is no way to get the audio into a file, or get the audio out of the note that ends up in Outlook (or even listen to it there)..

Ubuntu - Gutsy Gibbon - The Composite Extension is not available (Part 2)

Sooo the error I got was:

"Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/glitz/libglitz1_0.5.6-1_i386.deb
Could not connect to us.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (91.189.88.31), connection timed out [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]"

I was able to download that via Firefox to the desktop, then I ran it by double-clicking it. Then I went back and installed the two packages again in Synaptic, and everything was hunky-dorey! (Still haven't gotten the cube to run but thaz a story for 'nother day!)

What you want to do is get "Compiz" working - in order to use all that eye-candy you see on You-Tube :)

install xserver-xgl using the Synaptic Package Manager

My status is 5 files are failing to download - which is holding up progress for the moment...
