I *was* a big fan of Ubuntu for years, until I read this article. But as far as I'm concerned, this is about as close to a living definition of sell-out as you can get.

And because Ubuntu was the closest thing Linux and open source had to a success, I'm declaring Linux and open source failed too, at least in terms of a business model. When you have to pimp your customers, you need an intervention. Yikes! This isn't free as in beer, this is free as in train wreck.

Firefox won’t run, Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

If you are running the version of Ubuntu that just came out with Unity replacing Gnome, and can’t get Firefox to run from the new launcher, check out the link above with goes to an Ubuntu bug report. The workaround is to press Alt+F2 and type in firefox. This worked for me.

Ubuntu 10.10 Live USB problem and fix

I downloaded the new ISOs for desktop and netbook, as well as this nifty new tool for creating a USB flash bootable version out of it, all from Ubuntu’s site. I also had an older version of Unetbootin that I had found elsewhere on the internet from the last couple of Ubuntu releases.

The tool linked to from Ubuntu’s site is a Pendrive Linux utility: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Installer.exe.

Both of these tools (Unetbootin and Pendrive Universal Installer) take a linux live iso (which you would typically burn onto a cd) and blow it onto a USB thumbdrive so that you can actually boot machines to Linux from the thumbdrive, leaving the underlying OS on the hard drive, XP or Win7 or whatever, completely alone.

But to get to the problem – neither of these tools worked with the Ubuntu 10.10 desktop iso. Well they worked, but the machine would not boot from the USB thumbdrive. Well it would boot but it would fail very early with an error message.

After some Googling around, I managed to track the problem down to the USB installer. I don’t know what has changed so significantly in 10.10, but neither of those utilities works right with it. Well actually one does, if you get the new version released since 10.10 was released, Unetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/. The newest version worked fine and solved all my problems.

However this is not an auspicious start (say compared to turning on the iPad for the first time).

Ubuntu - Gutsy Gibbon - The Composite Extension is not available (Part 2)

Sooo the error I got was:

"Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/glitz/libglitz1_0.5.6-1_i386.deb
Could not connect to us.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (91.189.88.31), connection timed out [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]"

I was able to download that via Firefox to the desktop, then I ran it by double-clicking it. Then I went back and installed the two packages again in Synaptic, and everything was hunky-dorey! (Still haven't gotten the cube to run but thaz a story for 'nother day!)

Ubuntu - Gutsy Gibbon - The Composite Extension is not available

Weeeell I'll put what I know out there, but so far this I still don't have this working..

What you want to do is get "Compiz" working - in order to use all that eye-candy you see on You-Tube :)

install xserver-xgl using the Synaptic Package Manager

My status is 5 files are failing to download - which is holding up progress for the moment...
